Fortin, Marc-Aurèle

Marc-Aurèle Fortin was born in 1888 at Sainte-Rose, Québec. He studied with Ludger Larose at the École du Plateau and with Edmond Dyonnet. He pursued his training at the Chicago Institute, then in New York and Boston.

In 1922, he decided to devote himself entirely to his art. Thanks to an art patron, he moved to Montréal where he joined the Groupe de l'Arche. In 1932, John Lyman invited him to exhibit with the Atelier group and, in 1933, he exhibited with the Canadian Group in Toronto. In 1934, Fortin left for Europe where he lived for two years. His career really began when he associated with the Galerie l'Art Français in 1940. In 1942, he took part in an exhibition with Holgate, Adrien Hébert and Henri Hébert at the Musée du Québec. In 1946, the Galerie l'Art Français published a series of prints and organized an exhibition of his works in Holland. Fortin participated in many group exhibitions in Canada, United States, South Africa, South America and Europe. in 1964, the National Gallery of Canada organized a retrospective of his works which travelled to many Canadian museums.
