Cosgrove, Stanley

Stanley Cosgrove was born in Montreal on December 23rd, 1911. As his mother discover his artistic leanings, he studies at Montreal’s school of Fine Arts in 1929 where he is taught by Joseph Saint-Charles, Edwin Holgate and Charles Maillard.

In the thirties, his work is successful and he receives a scholarship to go to France. As the War starts, he has to go to Mexico where he enrolls at the Academy of San Carlos. He becomes the assistant of Jose Clemente Orozco.

He was a part of « Canadian Group of Painters » which is the most important artistic movement after « Group of seven ». His work is exhibited at the canadian museums and at the « Museum of Modern Art » of New-York.

He mainly paints still lifes, landscapes and a few portraits and nudes.
